Machado de Assis’s second novel, A mão e a luva, was published in serial form in twenty installments in 1874 by O Globo in Rio de Janeiro. Published originally with the subtitle, “Um perfil de mulher” [Profile of a woman], the novel follows the precarious social position of a strong young woman, Guiomar, who is variously courted, pursued, threatened, and coerced by three potential suitors.
