About

The author of nine novels, over a hundred short stories, several volumes of poetry, nearly a dozen plays, numerous translations, and countless essays, crônicas, and newspaper articles, Machado de Assis stands out among nineteenth-century Latin American writers both for the sheer volume of his work as well as for his creative talents. The attention given to Machado de Assis by scholars from around the world provides evidence of Machado’s continued relevance in Brazilian literary studies as well as within the canon of world literature.

The goal of the Machado de Assis Digital Corpus Project (MADCP) is to leverage new tools developed within the fields of digital humanities and corpus linguistics to explore Machado’s work in quantitative ways that were previously impractical if not impossible. These tools can help scholars examine narrative framework, sentence structure, and diction within particular texts and across the entire corpus. They can assist in answering questions about Machado’s style and content. Perhaps more importantly, these tools can help identify new questions and new avenues for research and investigation.

This project is in an early stage, and consequently the corpus is incomplete. Over time, texts will be added to expand the corpus. Similarly, many of the tools of digital humanities and corpus linguistics have not yet been localized into Brazilian Portuguese.
